Padova

 

Padova (Padua)

 

Directly behind Padua are the Colle Euganei hills home to famous spa resorts and lush-green hills that are ideal for cyclists.  The city centre is very small and all the sights could easily be covered in half a day by foot while enjoying interesting passageways in-between sights.

 

• Basilica di Sant'Antonio, (the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua) is the largest church in Padua and is crowned by Byzantine domes and minaret style towers, it is only second to the Basilica of St. Marks for its Asian inspired beauty.  

• Palazzo della Ragione (Law Courts) Located near the basilica, a necessary and inevitable destination for those meandering about the historic center of town, the picturesque open-air markets of Piazza delle Erbe (Square of the Herbs) and Piazza della Frutta

• Piazza dei Signori, is the sight of the daily market which runs from the early morning hours until midday.

• Caffθ Pedrocchi
The Pedrocchi is a historic landmark, as beloved by the Padovans as "their" own St. Anthony (who actually hailed from Lisbon).  When it first opened in 1831, it was the largest cafe in Europe.

• Bo - Universitΰ Palazzo Centrale
Galileo's battered desk and podium where he taught from 1592 to 1610 is still on display in Italy's second-oldest university (after Bologna). His name joins a legendary honor roll of students and professors, Petrarch, Dante, the poet Tasso, Copernicus,who came here from all over Europe.

• Scrovegni Chapel which was erected in the 13th century.  An unassuming building from the exterior, the interior houses one of Italy 's most precious works of art that has been recently restored. Giotto decorated the interior of the building.

• Botanical garden - the world's first, was created in Padua in 1545, which owes their creation to Daniele Barbaro owner of the Villa Barbaro and close friend of Andrea Palladio.

On the outskirts of Padova there are other attractions that could help visitors to the city enjoy spending a couple of nights in this city.    Between Padova and Venice lies the Riviera Brenta, a waterway that is home to over 200 villas including Palladio's Villa Malcontenta.

The city centre is very small and all the sights could easily be covered in half a day by foot while enjoying interesting passageways in-between sights.

 

Vicenza, a city in northern Italy, is the capital of the eponymous province in the Veneto region, at the northern base of the Monte Berico, straddling the Bacchiglione. Vicenza is approximately 60 km west of Venice and 200 km east of Milan.

Vicenza has been declared a Unesco town, it has one of the highest ratios of monumental buildings to population in Italy.  Once inside the Medieval quarters of centre of the city you'll be overwhelmed by the beauty and splendour of the surroundings that invite the visitor to explore the cobbled streets lined with elegant shops, where architectural gems by the likes of Palladio are waiting to be discovered.

 

What to see:


• Corso Palladio downtown is the main road in Vicenza, yet it is closed off to traffic. The downtown area is full of majestic palaces, street cafes, boutiques and shops. At the far end is Teatro Olimpico


• Basilica in the square,  under the arches of the basilica are steps leading up to the first tier.

• Comune di Vicenza, or town hall, occupies many interesting palaces around the square.


• Palazzo Chiericati - rectangular building enfronting a piazza. Designed as a house for an important Vincenza citizen, it makes a very public front to the square with open loggias on both the ground floor and the piano nobile.

 

• Chamber of Commerce located downtown in Corso Fogazzaro.

• Chiesa dei Carmini - ceiling fresco in  is just one of the many frescoes you'll find in churches around Vicenza.

• Piazza dei signori - The two columns in were built at different times.
 

• Monte della Pietΰ in piazza dei signori dates back to 1409 and was a place to go when you wanted to pawn your valuables.

 

• San Vincenzo church directly behind the facade was built 20 years earlier


• Giardini Salvi is the Loggia Valmarana. The park is just outside Porta Castello at the end of Corso Palladio, and is a great place to relax on a hot summer day.

• Oratorio di Santa Chiara, a magnificent 15th century structure which is amazingly well preserved.

• Monte Berico - beautiful walk up to the church of Berico where one can admire the view over Vicenza with the cathedral.

Venice - Dolomiti, Tour 1 full day excursion which includes:

•  Highlight of the day will be a drive-up to the Tre Cime.  Standing directly below these towering peaks that are the most famous in the Dolomites, you will be able to gaze out across a myriad of ranges and peaks that make up the Dolomite Mountains. Take an easy walk along a level trail to further appreciate the beauty of the mountains.

• late afternoon, we follow the scenic roads through ever-changing countryside, as we make our way back to Venice.   Passing several major peaks along the way, you'll have plenty of time to savour the different colours of the Dolomite mountains as they are illuminated by the late afternoon sun.
